The Design Process

Our first step was to derive a volumetric or massing study from John’s sketches. This 3D drawing is a useful, multipurpose tool:

Seen in true perspective from any vantage, bereft of decoration, texture or ‘hand’, it is an ideal mechanism for refining proportions. If the building looks good in a naked Cad drawing, its appearance can only improve once finishes and details are applied. The massing study also helps bring to light problems that are elusive in 2D. And by establishing primary datum lines/surfaces for the project, it can be used as the underpinning for all subsequent architectural and structural drawing, thereby minimizing conflicts between different drawings and offices.

In this scenario, new information can be treated as an opportunity for development and refinement, rather than as a problem requiring change orders and requests for information.
